Marriage customs around the world

There are many different marriage customs around the world. In Norway, brides wear crowns to deflect evil spirits. In India, couples get mehndi inked on their hands and feet. And in Japan, bonding over sake is an important part of the wedding tradition.

Marriage customs around the world

United States

Although Christian weddings in the Arab World bear similarities to Western weddings, Muslim weddings in the Arab world have many unique customs and traditions. One of these is the blackening of the bride.

Instead of exchanging wedding vows, the bride and groom – and parents too – sip sake, three times each, from three different-sized cups. The first set of cups is large and represents good fortune, the second set is medium-sized and symbolizes happiness, and the last set is small and represents longevity.

Mexico

Weddings are a time-honored tradition that is celebrated in cultures around the world. While there are many similarities in wedding customs from different cultures, there are also some unique traditions that make each culture’s weddings special.

In Mexico, one of the most unique aspects of weddings is the lasso. The lasso is a large rosary that is used to bind the bride and groom together during the ceremony. This symbolizes their love and commitment to each other and is a reminder that they will pray for each other always.

Another interesting Mexican wedding tradition is the presentation of las arras matrimoniales, or 13 gold coins, to the bride by the groom. This represents prosperity and financial trust between the newlyweds.

Mexican weddings also typically feature Mariachi bands, which add an extra element of fun and festivity to the occasion.
All of these traditions come together to create a Mexican wedding

China

Marriage customs around the world are diverse, but there are some commonalities among many cultures. In China, marriages used to be arranged by the parents of the bride and groom with the aid of a matchmaker. Although that practice is not often practiced now, there are still many traditional elements in a Chinese wedding.

The invitations are usually red, and the envelope is decorated with auspicious characters—such as happiness and wealth—and containing a sum in even numbers. The bride will serve tea to her family before the wedding, and there is also a tradition of "crying for the groom" where the bride cries for her husband-to-be on the morning of the wedding. These traditions help to bond families together and create a strong union between husband and wife.

Japan

Wedding ceremonies in Japan are some of the most beautiful and unique in the world. From the ancient sake-drinking ceremony of san san kudo to the renting of wedding dresses, Japanese weddings are full of fascinating traditions.

Shinto-style weddings are particularly stunning, with the bride and groom often wearing traditional clothing and inviting only close family and friends to the ceremony. While western-style weddings are also popular in Japan, many couples choose to legalise their marriage without a ceremony.

India

Marriage customs around the world are very interesting. In India, for example, marriages are traditionally very elaborate and colorful affairs with lots of fanfare and rituals. However, in some areas of the country if a girl is born under an unlucky astrological sign, her parents may arranged for her to marry a tree!

This is done in order to transfer the bad luck to the tree and away from the girl. From India and Japan, all the way to Mexico or the UK, there are all sorts of different marriage customs and traditions.
