Iraq is a land rich in culture and tradition, especially when it comes to marriage. Every wedding starts with the engagement, the guy sees a girl, then if they like each other, he asks for her hand (in other words to marry her). The Iraqi Social Status Law (civil) establishes marriage laws in Iraq. Foreigners marrying in Iraq are subject to the provisions of the Social Status Law.

 Marriage traditions in Iraq


 The Sixth: Wedding day, which is almost like our customs in Jordan with a simple difference, that the bride wear Iraqi woman Masada, which is a gold and silver embroidered dress that covers her from head to toe. Most wedding ceremonies involve an exchange of marriage vows by the couple, presentation of a gift (ring, flowers etc and a toast to the couple (no alcohol).

The Groom\'s Family Pays a


The groom\'s family pays a visit to the bride\'s family to ask for her hand in marriage. If the bride\'s family agrees, the two families will negotiate a dowry and wedding date. A night before the wedding, there is a "Lailat Al-henna" party where one of the relatives puts henna on the newlywed\'s pinkie or palm. On the day of the wedding, there is a large feast and music is played.



The Wedding Ceremony is Held at the Bride\'s House



The wedding ceremony is held at the bride's house. All the guests are welcomed and the couple is introduced to the close relatives from both sides. The bride's mother starts the procession and the groom, best man, paired-up wedding party, flower girl, and ring bearer follow. 


The exchange of marriage vows and presentation of gifts take place. A reception is held afterwards for all the guests. The bride getting married in her hometown is traditional, but it's also a sign of respect to the family.


A Wedding Banquet is Held in Honor of the Newlyweds


A wedding banquet is a party usually held in honor of the newlyweds after the completion of their marriage ceremony. The other guests at the banquet are usually friends and family members of the couple. The banquet is often held at a hotel or banquet hall, and typically includes a sit-down meal, speeches, and dancing.


The bride and groom are typically the guests of honor at the banquet, and they will often give a speech thanking their guests for attending. The other guests will also give speeches, toasts, and congratulations to the newlyweds. The meal is usually a formal affair, with multiple courses and wine served. After the meal, there is often live music and dancing.


The wedding banquet is a key part of many wedding celebrations, and it is an opportunity for the newlyweds to celebrate their marriage with their closest friends and family members.


Friends and Family Give the Couple Gifts
